Tattoo Apprenticeships
If you are reading this, you have probably been thinking about
becoming a professional tattoo artist and or body piercer for some time now.
Finding a good mentor and in turn, a good apprenticeship is a difficult task. It
is this reason why we offer many tattoo kits, training videos and practice
tattoo skin for those of you who don't want to comb the earth looking for an
apprenticeship. However, read on for some important things to keep in
mind!
Finding a Tattoo Apprenticeship You are not looking for just any Tattoo Apprenticeship. You need to find a
skilled tattooist who is willing to teach you not only tattooing and/or
piercing, but a host of other important techniques such as sterilization, proper
technique, client management and business management. A mentor will be able to
save you much trouble with sage advice and knowledge of past mistakes. Learning
how tattoo takes talent and a lot of study and time.
Picking your Mentor There are many tattoo artists out there... many are good, however, just as many
suck! You need to find someone with a decent level of business and a high level
of experience. Some expert tattooists have been introduced to tattooing since birth!!! A tattoo artist with 5 years or more experience will be a good
start. Most of all, you need to find someone who is willing to train you, which
can be the most daunting task!
Your Tattooing Portfolio Once you find someone
who is qualified to mentor you, you will need to show them something to convince
them of your talent and abilities. This is where your portfolio comes into play.
Drawings are great and if you have already done some tattooing on practice
skins, that would be a well rounded portfolio. Yes, practice skins... I sure
hope you haven't been getting your buddies drunk just to practice on them as
they passed out!
The Attitude During your tattoo apprenticeship,
your mentor will want to see that you are enthusiastic about learning, open to
criticism and have a real love for tattooing. Learn as much as you can
beforehand though so your mentor will not lose patience with your
ignorance.
Get it in Writing It is very rare that a deal on
a handshake goes as it was intended nowadays. Since this tattoo apprenticeship
will most likely cost you money, it is best to have a contract in order to
protect both parties. This way, you ensure your money is going to real learning.
Some rare breeds will give tattooing apprenticeships for free... don't bother with a
contract if that is the case!
